This book develops a new theoretical architecture. The dyadic model of thought that prevails in mainstream economics is to be replaced by a triadic model. Dyadic thinking is governed by the principle of instrumental rationality. It abstracts from society and from social relations. When applied to society, it leads to catastrophic misjudgments. Above all, it leaves out money—the medium around which societies organize themselves. The aim of this work is to develop the triadic model of thought consistently and to give money the place in theory that its central role in society requires. Money is not neutral—without money, there is no society. Triadic thinking calls for a radical reformulation of the theories of value and money. To think about society is to think about money.

In this study, which was also my doctoral dissertation, I examined whether Marx’s theory could provide a suitable basis for an alternative to the capitalist monetary economy. The answer was no. Marxian theory would have to be radically reformulated. By uncovering the contradictions in Marxian doctrine, I already recognized at the time that a society could not be governed through central planning but would depend on spontaneous commodity–money relations. Hence the book’s subtitle.
